Strawberry Storage Tips

How to handle:

Pick strawberries with their caps on and refrigerate them immediately after picking. Store them in shallow containers so they don't bruise. To prevent them from getting soft or moldy, wash them just before you use them. Fresh in season strawberries will keep for 2-3 days in your refrigerator.

Freezing Strawberries:

Whole, unsweetened
-Wash, hull and drain the berries. Place them in a single layer on cookie sheets in the freezer. When the strawberries are hard, quickly transfer them in to freezer safe bags. Store in freezer.

Whole, sweetened
-Allow about 3/4 cup of sugar for each 5 cups of strawberries. Wash, hull and drain the strawberries. Gently mix the sugar with the berries and spread a single layer on cookie sheets. Freeze, package and store as directed above.

Sliced, sugar pack
-Allow 1 cup of sugar for each 6 cups sliced strawberries. Mix the sliced strawberries with sugar and allow to stand until sugar dissolves, about 10 minutes. Package in plastic freezer containers, leaving half an inch headspace. Yield: about 3 pints for each 6 cups of berries.
