Hail netting is used to protect apples trees and apples against hail damage and insect penetration.  The apple trees are first covered in mid-June when the fruit begins to grow.

Hail netting is applied and removed using a machine called a NetWhiz.  The NetWhiz unrolls (applies) and rolls (removal) the hail netting, which comes in 100-meter rolls.

The video shows our team making sure the hail netting is being removed correctly.

The netting reduces UV light to the applies by 15%; however, it does not delay the ripening process.
